Research we have carried out with parents of children with special needs and disabilities attending mainstream schools suggests these families are some of the most isolated in our community. Children with special needs in mainstream schools represent a small minority within the schools population and parents lack contact with other families in a similar situation.
As a result of this research in 2014 we began piloting a support group for parent-carers whose children attend mainstream schools in Worthing. Known as “Umbrellas” the group has proved highly popular. As a result we secured funding from West Sussex County Council Local Committees to establish two further groups in Billingshurst and Haywards Heath and we are now trialing a further group in Littlehampton.
If you are interested in joining the Umbrellas group in Worthing or Littlehampton please contact Rosemary Hudson on 07704 037664 or email her.
If you are interested in attending the Umbrellas groups in Billingshurst or Haywards Heath please contact Michele Creed on 07470 005734 or email her.
